Our Programs

The Dallas Committee offers members about 30 programs each year on various aspects of foreign policy and international affairs. Meetings are for members only, off the record, and not for attribution. Speakers include US and foreign ambassadors, cabinet ministers, policy-makers and analysts, and on rare occasions, heads of state. Occasionally we offer cooperative programs with other organizations & institutions. As we do not offer honoraria or travel expenses, we schedule programs when speakers are available to us. Most programs are luncheons hosted by members. Occasionally we will hold breakfast, dinner, or after-work programs.

DCFR programs tend to be small and private, so that speakers can discuss issues candidly. As our members are highly-placed business and academic leaders with proven interest and experience in international policy, discussions are usually lively, of interest to speakers and members alike.

The Dallas Committee finds our speakers through various means. Originally founded under the auspices of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Dallas Committee continues to have a close cooperative relationship with the Council, co-sponsoring programs with Council Fellows each year. As an affiliate of the American Committees, Dallas takes several speakers offered from ACFR. In addition, DCFR provides program opportunities for current foreign policy-makers and analysts from governments here and abroad, and from leading think tanks and institutions around the country.

We have enjoyed a wealth of distinguished discussants since our first meetings in 1987. These include: Richard Lugar, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee; Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Marc Grossman; Secretary of Treasury Lawrence Summers; Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen; former Chairman of UNSCOM Richard Butler; Mary McAleese, President of Ireland, Karl Carstens, President of the Federal Republic of Germany; Vladimir Shcherbitsky of the Soviet Politburo; Boris Yeltsin, then Mayor of Moscow; Prime Minister Lange of New Zealand; President Patricio Aylwin of Chile; Dr. Subroto, Secretary General of OPEC; Zhu Rongji, Mayor of Shanghai (& former Premier of China); Governor of Guanajuato (now President of Mexico) Vicente Fox; former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher; and former President Nicholas Barletta of Panama. We have met with leading members of numerous foreign parliaments, as well as American senators, congressmen and representatives from the Executive office. We frequently hear from ambassadors of countries around the globe, and from U.S. ambassadors to foreign posts. In addition, we have heard from numerous leading analysts and specialists such as Joe Nye on arms control, Daniel Yergin on energy issues, Harry Harding and Kenneth Lieberthal on China, Clyde Prestowitz and Richard Fisher on Japan, Eugene Lawson on Russia, as well as many others.
