Membership Selection

DCFR’s Membership Committee and Board of Directors review nominations monthly. If you would like to recommend an individual for membership, please refer to the guidelines below and submit a complete nomination packet to:

Membership levels

Fellows.
Candidates for full membership should be local leaders in their fields who have demonstrated experience and expertise in international affairs and are important to the development of North Texas as an international center. They should be able to contribute meaningfully to the support of DCFR programs with their time, talents, and resources.

Term Members.
Individuals between the ages of 26 and 35 (inclusive) at the time of their application are eligible for term membership. Term member candidates should exhibit outstanding professional potential and a demonstrated interest in international affairs. Successful candidates may apply for full membership at age 36. Any candidate who is 35 or younger must apply as a term member.

Corporate Members.
Candidates for corporate membership should obtain:
Degree of experience, expertise, and demonstrated leadership 
Promise of future leadership and involvement in international affairs 
Level of educational, intellectual, and professional achievement 
Character, aptitude, and interest in participating in DCFR activities 
Potential contributions to the life and work of DCFR, including initiating and hosting meetings
Applying business has international business or interest in expanding to international markets

Application Requirements

Letter of Nomination (required). 
Candidates must submit a letter of nomination by a current DCFR member. The Membership Committee discourages courtesy nominations of individuals you do not know well. Members may not nominate other family members. To ensure fair consideration of all candidates, nomination letters must address all of the criteria below. Letters that fail to do so will be considered incomplete and returned to the nominator. Letters should be no more than 700 words.

Membership Criteria

  •  Degree of experience, expertise, and demonstrated leadership in international affairs
  • Promise of future leadership and involvement in international affairs
  • Level of educational, intellectual, and professional achievement
  • Character, aptitude, and interest in participating in DCFR activities
  • Potential contributions to the life and work of DCFR, including initiating and hosting meetings

Seconding Letter (required).
Candidates must submit a seconding letter from a current DCFR member. Seconding letters may be less comprehensive than nominating letters but must amplify why the candidate should be considered and what the candidate will contribute to the life and work of DCFR. Again, members may not write in support of other family members.

Membership Application Form (required).
To ensure consistency in the presentation and evaluation of nominations, the Membership Committee and Board of Directors require receipt of the membership application form. Candidates may submit the form directly to DCFR or return it to their nominator for inclusion in the nomination packet. DCFR will not accept forms that are incomplete or that instruct the Membership Committee to “see résumé.”

Candidate Résumé or Curriculum Vitae (required). 
In addition to the Information Form, a résumé or curriculum vitae is required. Candidates may submit this document directly to DCFR or return it to the nominator for inclusion in the nomination packet.

MEMBER RESPONSIBILITIES

The responsibilities of membership include:

Payment of annual dues. Members pay dues at the beginning of each calendar year. Dues are used for administrative purposes only.

Commitment to host programs. DCFR operates on the host model, with an active member presiding over each meeting and underwriting the cost of the program. The responsibility to host programs is rotated widely. Every effort is made to match members with speakers based on the member’s interests and expertise. Members are expected to sponsor or co-sponsor at least once every three to four years. 

APPLICATION DEADLINES
A candidate’s nominator bears the responsibility for ensuring that applications are complete and deadlines met. Incomplete application will be carried over to the next round automatically and without prejudice. For information about current-year deadlines, please contact the DCFR office.

GUEST ATTENDANCE AT A MEETING
Members are encouraged to invite candidates or prospective candidates to meetings throughout the year for a modest fee. A guest may attend a maximum of two meetings in the span of a calendar year. Members should contact the DCFR office in advance to arrange for their guest to be seated with a member of the Board of Directors.
